Women in Construction at Cullum Mechanical: Honoring the Past, Building the Future

Each March, the construction industry pauses to recognize Women in Construction Week, (#WIC) a time dedicated to celebrating the vital role women play in shaping our built environment. Led by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), WIC Week highlights the achievements of women across every corner of our industry—from the field and shop to leadership, project management, and administration.

At Cullum Mechanical, this celebration extends far beyond a single week. It reflects our commitment to honoring the legacy of women in construction and investing in a future where their opportunities continue to grow. This year, we’re especially proud to recognize the work of Women of Construction, a newly founded organization in our Charleston community dedicated to uplifting people across all corners of the construction industry. From tradeswomen and tradesmen alike to rising youth and seasoned pros, united by a shared passion for building, leading, and advocating for a more inclusive future.

A Look Back: Women Have Always Been Part of the Story

While the construction industry has historically been male-dominated, women have contributed far more than many realize. Recently, Cullum Mechanical leadership uncovered an archived newspaper article from decades ago highlighting women’s involvement in the company’s operations, a reminder that women have long played important roles behind the scenes and on the job.

These historical moments demonstrate that women have always been an essential part of construction, whether through office support, project coordination, skilled trades, or leadership. It is a legacy that underscores how far the industry has come and the importance of continuing to break barriers. Cullum Mechanical is proud to honor this history and recognize women who have helped shape the company over the years.

National Women in Construction Week: Why It Matters

NAWIC established Women in Construction Week to shine a light on opportunities for women in the industry and to raise awareness about the importance of diversity, inclusion, and representation. Construction continues to face nationwide labor shortages, and attracting women into the field is essential to the industry’s growth.

Not only does Cullum Mechanical exceed the national average overall, but the company also surpasses industry benchmarks when it comes to women working directly in the trades.

Women Across Every Role at Cullum Mechanical

At Cullum Mechanical, women contribute across a wide range of positions that keep projects running safely, efficiently, and successfully. In the trades, women work as skilled laborers, equipment operators, and on project-specific teams, tackling physically and technically demanding roles. On the administrative side, women manage accounting, human resources, project coordination, and client relations, ensuring projects stay on time and on budget.

In leadership positions, women guide operations, safety protocols, and project management strategies, influencing company culture and decision-making. Their presence brings a diversity of thought, fosters collaboration, and strengthens problem-solving on every project. This diversity is not just about numbers; it directly impacts project success and company growth.

Mentorship and Career Development

A key part of Cullum’s commitment to women in construction is fostering mentorship and career development. Team members are encouraged to share knowledge, support new hires, and develop skills that allow women to advance in traditionally male-dominated roles.

Mentorship programs, hands-on training, and industry networking opportunities create pathways for women to reach higher levels of expertise and leadership. These initiatives empower team members to not only excel in their current roles but also prepare for future opportunities within Cullum and the construction industry as a whole.

Supporting the Next Generation

Celebrating Women in Construction Week is also about looking ahead. Cullum Mechanical recognizes the importance of encouraging young women to explore careers in construction, whether through skilled trades, engineering, project management, or business support roles.

By highlighting stories of women thriving in these roles, the company helps shift perceptions of construction careers. What was once seen as a male-only field is now recognized as a dynamic industry full of opportunity, innovation, and rewarding careers for women with diverse skills and interests.
